About Tom

Twenty years in specialty electrical contracting. Co-founded and co-managed a special systems firm for eleven years before selling it in 2024.

Somewhere in those twenty years, Tom Atkinson discovered that the financial tools most contractors trust were built to hide the truth, not reveal it. Gross margin looks like an indicator of health. It isn't. Trusting gross profit takes profit out of your pocket in ways your reporting doesn't show you. He saw the pattern, built a tool to fix it, and wrote a book about it.

Now he teaches what the journey taught him, through his book, through speaking, and through Trades Alignment, the firm he built to put the idea to work inside real businesses.

Tom speaks from the field, not the whiteboard.

Every topic is built around what twenty years of doing the work actually taught him: the patterns he saw repeat, the mistakes he made, and the clarity that came from finally being able to see the numbers clearly.

BOOK TOM
The Growth Paradox

Why growing revenue is the most dangerous thing a trades business can do without the right visibility in place first.

The Liar, The Thief

The financial pattern hiding inside almost every trades business using the story of Eli, the project manager who finally saw it.

the power to say no

Why the most profitable move a contractor can make is learning which jobs to turn down and how to build the clarity to do it with confidence.

Have, Can, Should: A Pricing Framework

The three questions every bid should answer and why most contractors are only asking one of them.

The Liar, The thief book

The book trades contractors have needed for a long time.

It’s not a textbook or a how-to guide. It’s a story for the contractor who may be up at 2 am wondering where the money went.  This contractor will recognize themself in the main character and will appreciate the hard-earned truths learned throughout.

THE LIAR, THE THIEF

Eli Thompson is a project manager trying to build something new inside his contracting firm. The numbers tell him he's winning. But they're lying. A business fable about the financial pattern most contractors never see coming until it's too late.

Content built for people who actually do the work.

Short videos, plain language, real numbers. Tom posts about the financial topics early entrepreneurs and project managers usually learn the hard way.  He also helps build a base knowledge that helps simplify complex topics, even for the trades veteran.
